Pine Island Beach
One of the last areas of Hernando County to be kissed by the setting sun is Pine Island, also known as Alfred McKethan Park. Located on the Gulf of Mexico, Pine Island offers a family-friendly beach for sunbathing, swimming, birdwatching, looking for sea turtles or dolphins, or reading a good book.
With clean white sand and shallow waters, Pine Island is a perfect place for the kids to work off some energy in the water or at the playground while the adults relax or enjoy a game of beach volleyball.
Cool beverages and light fare are available onsite at Willy's Tropical Breeze Cafe. Walk up to the window, place your order and take a seat in the shaded tiki hut while you wait. Pine Island offers covered picnic tables, small grills, an outdoor shower and restrooms, ensuring a stress-free outing. If you have a passion for sunsets, this is the place to be with your camera in hand, waiting for the perfect moment to click the shutter.
Local vendors rent a variety of kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddle boards for those wishing to enjoy a little adventure and exercise in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Twice each month from October through March, man's best friends enjoy being "top-dogs" on the beach as Bark Island is held from 7:30-9:30 a.m. on designated Saturdays. Dogs and their owners flock to this beautiful beach for frolicking fun in the surf ... naturally.
